The San Francisco Giants (76-74, 68-81 RL, 65-81-3 O/U) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (79-72, 80-71 RL, 66-78-7 O/U) conclude a two-game divisional series on Wednesday afternoon. The Giants will give the starting nod to Logan Webb. The Diamondbacks will have Merrill Kelly on the mound. The Giants lead the season series 6-5.

Webb Starts, Giants Dealt Ugly Series Loss

The Giants will send Logan Webb to the mound. Webb came through with another gem in his previous outing, allowing just one run in eight innings against the Rockies but had no help, resulting in a no-decision in a game the Giants lost. The veteran right-hander continues to shine, posting a minuscule 1.74 ERA this month, and is sporting a solid 3.31 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP accompanied by a 10-12 record in 201 innings. Webb has a 2.57 ERA in three starts against Arizona this season and has registered a dazzling 2.62 ERA and a 5-2 record in 55 innings.

San Francisco had a costly series loss against the Rockies this past weekend, dropping three of the four meetings. They began that series in a WC spot and are now two games out of a spot. The pitching was horrid in that series, allowing 27 runs in four games. The Giants are 6-4 in their last ten clashes.

J.D Davis has not been the issue in the recent string of losses, collecting nine RBIs and a sharp 1.051 OPS in September. The 30-year-old third baseman now has 18 homers with 69 RBIs and a .751 OPS on the season. Davis has recorded seven RBIs against the D-Backs this season.

San Francisco is posting an average of 4.33 runs, marking them 21st. The pitching staff has recorded a 4.01 team ERA, good for 10th.

Kelly Gets the Nod, D-Backs Battle in WC

Merrill Kelly will get the nod on Wednesday. Kelly had a disastrous outing last time out, giving up seven runs in five innings against the Mets, and was charged with the loss. The right-hander is usually reliable. He had allowed just one run in his first two outings this month and is sporting a 3.45 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP accompanied by an 11-7 record in 159 innings on the season. Kelly squandered five runs in five innings in the only meeting against the Giants this year and has recorded a 3.48 ERA and a 6-5 record in 101 career innings against the rivals.

Arizona has won two of their last three series. They rebounded from a series loss to the Mets by dealing the Cubs a three-game sweep on the weekend, scoring 19 runs in the series. The Diamondbacks stand in the last wildcard spot. The squad is six games above .500 at home and 6-4 in their last ten bouts.

Christian Walker has been a tough out against the Giants this season, posting 10 RBIs and a .907 OPS. The 32-year-old first baseman is having an excellent season. He now has 30 homers with 93 RBIs and an .829 OPS. Walker is slumping recently, issuing a weak .560 OPS in September.

Arizona is averaging a solid 4.62 runs, marking them 14th. The pitching has been subpar and has produced a 4.58 ERA, positioning them 22nd in the big leagues.

The San Francisco Giants always have a great chance to win games when Logan Webb is on the mound. The Giants ace is capable of going seven to eight innings. He limited the Rockies to one run in eight innings last time out. Webb usually silences Arizona, holding the rivals to six runs in 21 innings this season.

Furthermore,  Merrill Kelly can be shaky. He just gave up seven runs to the Mets and has surrendered 16 runs in his last four outings spanning 22.2 innings. Arizona has only won in four of Kelly’s last ten outings. The Giants have beaten the Diamondbacks in three straight meetings entering Tuesday.

I expect more of a pitchers' duel. Webb has the ability to go deep into the game and has issued a minuscule 1.74 ERA in his three starts in September. Arizona has only averaged 3.9 runs against the Giants this season. They have not been scoring as many runs, plating four or fewer runs in seven of their last ten games.

In addition, Kelly has produced a solid 3.48 career ERA in 101 innings against the Giants. Kelly is stronger at home, posting a stifling 2.81 ERA in 80 home innings. The under is a convincing 5-0 in Kelly's last five home starts.

Prediction: Under 8.5
