Detroit Tigers (70-80) vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (92-57)

The 2023 MLB season continues Wednesday, September 20, with the Detroit Tigers facing off against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the interleague battle at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, and the first pitch is set for 10:10 PM ET.

Detroit and LA wrap up a three-game series in California. The Dodgers took the opener 8-3, while the middle game has been excluded from this preview. The Boys in Blue are surefire -225 moneyline favorites for Wednesday’s closer, so let’s take a closer look.

The Tigers stopped their four-game win streak on Monday

The Detroit Tigers fell to 70-80 on the season following Monday’s defeat at Dodger Stadium. They put an end to a four-game winning streak, while Eduardo Rodriguez put on a disappointing performance, surrendering five earned runs on five hits and a walk across three innings of work. The Cats added to the scoreboard in the top of the fifth thanks to Jake Rogers’ three-run homer, but their bullpen yielded three more runs after that.

Detroit is slashing an underwhelming .237/.312/.371 with 17 extra-base hits and 14 home runs in the past two weeks and 447 at-bats. Their pitching staff has been solid during that span, posting a 3.57 ERA to go with a 1.12 WHIP and a .203 batting average against.

Reese Olson is projected to toe the rubber Wednesday in LA. The 24-year-old rookie right-hander is 4-7 with a serviceable 4.30 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 91/29 K/BB ratio in 16 starts and three relief appearances (92 innings pitched) this season. Olson has done a great job over his last four outings, allowing just four earned runs on 11 hits and nine walks while punching out 23 across 24 innings of work.

The Dodgers continue to mash

The Los Angeles Dodgers extended their winning streak to four games with that 8-3 victory over the Tigers and improved to 92-57 on the season. JD Martinez homered twice and drove in five runs, while Miguel Rojas went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and two runs scored. The Dodgers, who have already clinched the NL West title, were 3.5 games behind the NL-leading Atlanta Braves on Tuesday morning.

The Boys in Blue are hitting .267/.350/.466 with 22 extra-base hits and 22 round-trippers in the last couple of weeks and 457 at-bats. On the pitching side of things, they’ve compiled a 3.94 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and .228 batting average against during that span.

Bobby Miller is slated to take the hill Wednesday, and the 24-year-old right-hander carries a 10-3 record with a 4.02 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 99/30 K/BB ratio in 19 starts (107.1 IP) in his rookie season. Miller hasn’t been sharp of late, giving up 17 earned runs on 28 hits and eight walks over his last five starts and 32 innings of work.

I’ve mentioned Reese Olson’s strong performance over his previous four starts. However, two of those four games came against the lowly Chicago White Sox in which Olson allowed two earned runs through 13.2 frames of work. This time, he’ll meet the mighty Dodgers, who have registered a 128 wRC+ and .216 ISO against right-handed pitchers in the last ten days (270 plate appearances).

On the other side, Bobby Miller should fare well in this matchup. The Tigers have posted a 79 wRC+ and .116 ISO against the righties in the last ten days (256 PA). They’ll need another stellar performance from Reese Olson to keep it close against the Dodgers.

Prediction: Take the Los Angeles Dodgers -1.5 (-120)

The Dodgers have scored six or more runs in each but one of their previous 11 games overall. On the other side, the Cats have scored three or more runs in nine consecutive outings, so I’ll take the over on the totals at plus money.

It’s a tough wager because both bullpens have done a good job over the last two weeks. The Tigers’ relievers have recorded a 3.62 ERA and 3.61 FIP in 59.2 innings of work, and the Dodgers ‘pen has registered a 2.05 ERA and 2.46 FIP across 52.2 frames. I lean on the Dodgers’ lineup to make a difference, and the Tigers should score a couple of runs off Bobby Miller to help the over backers.

Prediction: Go over 9.0 runs (+105)
