The New York Mets (78-73, 3rd NL East) play the third and final game of a three-game series in south Florida on Wednesday against National League East rival the Miami Marlins (70-80, 4th NL East). New York defeated Miami 2-1 on Monday in the series opener. The Mets have won two straight but are 26 games behind first place in the NL East and 8 games behind the final wildcard spot in the NL with only 12 games remaining and would have to leapfrog five teams. Miami’s three-game winning streak was snapped in Monday’s loss. The Marlins are 16 ½ games behind first in the NL East, but are just a half game behind the final wildcard qualifying spot. New York will play without seven pitchers as well as position players Brett Baty and Starling Marte. Miami will play without six pitchers as well as position players Jonathan Davis and Avisail Garcia.

New York has struggled at the plate all season

The New York Mets need to find a few more productive hitters over the off-season. New York is 17th in on base percentage with .319 while 18th in slugging percentage at .407 and 20th in runs scored with 661. The Mets have a team batting average of .239 which is 25th. Pete Alonso has 45 home runs and 112 RBI which leads New York in both. Francisco Lindor has been very productive this season with 33 doubles, which leads the Mets, two triples, 26 home runs and 87 RBI. Lindor is second in both home runs and RBI.

On the mound, New York has the 13th most Quality Starts with 54. The Mets are 18th in both team ERA at 4.33 and batting average allowed at .247, while 21st in WHIP at 1.36. Wednesday's starting pitcher Kodai Senga is leading New York in victories with 11 and in strikeouts with 191. The 30-year-old right-hander is 11-7 with an ERA of 2.95.
