The Colorado Rockies (56-94, 74-76 RL, 70-79-1 O/U) meet with the San Diego Padres (73-78, 76-75 RL, 66-77-8 O/U) in the last bout of a three-game series on Wednesday afternoon. The Rockies will send Chase Anderson to the mound. The Padres will reply with Seth Lugo. The Padres lead the season series 7-4.

Rockies Earn Rare Series Victory

Chase Anderson will make the start on Wednesday. Anderson had his best outing of the season last time out, tossing seven no-hit innings against the Giants but allowed one run due to five walks, leading to a no-decision. The veteran right-hander has been a little better in recent outings but is having a horrible season, posting a 6.00 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP accompanied by an 0-5 record in 75 innings. Anderson has not pitched against SD this season and has strong numbers against the Padres, issuing a 3.88 ERA and a 3-1 record in 10 meetings.

Colorado is in a groove. They had won five games in a row including a series win against the Cubs before a narrow loss to the Giants on Sunday. All five of those wins occurred at home. The Rockies are horrible on the road where they are 32 games below the .500 mark. They are 5-5 in their last ten games.

Ryan McMahon has been stellar against the Padres this season, bashing four homers with nine RBIs and a .915 OPS. The 28-year-old third baseman is having a productive year, clubbing 23 homers with 70 RBIs and a .770 OPS. McMahon is slumping, recording a .605 OPS this month.

Colorado is scoring an average of 4.51 runs, ranking them 18th. The pitching remains last with a 5.68 ERA.

Lugo Starts, Padres Stay Hot

Seth Lugo will take the mound on Wednesday. Lugo wasn’t quite at his best last time out, allowing three runs including two home runs in six innings against the Athletics, and was able to record the win. The veteran has a weak 4.96 ERA in three performances this month but is having a solid year, producing a 3.83 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP accompanied by a 7-7 record in 131.1 innings pitched. Lugo has held the Rockies to four runs (three earned) in 14 innings this season and has issued a 2.63 ERA and a 3-0 record in 37.2 career innings.

San Diego is going to finish with a losing record which is hard to believe considering the big names on the roster. The squad is hot. They have won two consecutive series, winning two of three against the Dodgers and they swept the A’s prior to this series propelled by the offense, scoring 23 runs. The Padres are 7-3 in their last ten decisions.

Fernando Tatis Jr. has delivered eight RBIs complemented by an excellent 1.06 OPS against the Rockies this season. The 24-year-old slugger has solid numbers, bashing 25 homers along with 77 RBIs and a .795 OPS. He has accrued 10 RBIs and an .882 OPS  on the month. Jake Cronenworth is out.

San Diego is scoring an average of 4.7 runs per game, ranking them 13th. The pitching is solid, amassing a 3.91 team ERA, placing them fifth.

Rating:

The Colorado Rockies are abysmal on the road. They have dropped eight of their last ten road bouts entering Tuesday night. The San Diego Padres have momentum, winning two consecutive series highlighted by a series win against the Dodgers. They have won five in a row entering Tuesday.

Furthermore, Rockies’ starter Chase Anderson can’t be trusted against this offense. Despite allowing just one run last time out, Anderson has a 5.65 ERA on the month. His numbers are horrible on the road where he has issued an 8.16 ERA. Padres’ starter Seth Lugo has shut down the Rockies, limiting them to four runs (three earned) in 14 innings this season, and has a 2.63 career ERA against the rivals.

I expect plenty of scoring. The Rockies bats are producing, scoring at least five runs in four consecutive games. Lugo has not been quite as sharp recently, reporting a 4.96 ERA on the month.

In addition, the Padres have exploited the Rockies pitching all season, averaging 5.7 runs in the 11 meetings and that success will continue against Anderson. The Padres scored 19 runs in three games against the Dodgers last week and at least five runs in each of their last five clashes. The over is 8-2 in the Padres’ last ten games.

Prediction: Over 8.5
